How to Keep Your Christmas Tree Fresh

A well-hydrated tree is a happy tree!

Keeping Your Real Christmas Tree Fresh Through the Holidays

We’ve all been there—worrying about whether our Christmas tree will stay lush and green until Christmas Day. You had the best intentions, but somewhere along the way, things didn’t go as planned.

Did I miss something? Should I have watered it more? What could I have done to keep it looking fresh longer?

Well, here’s the good news: keeping your Christmas tree alive isn’t rocket science. With a few simple steps, you can ensure your tree looks beautiful for weeks.

Step 1: Give Your Tree Stump a Fresh Cut

When a Christmas tree is cut, its sap can create a seal over the trunk, making it harder for the tree to absorb water. This can shorten its lifespan significantly. To avoid this, trim about 1-2 cm off the bottom of the trunk before setting up your tree. This fresh cut will allow the tree to absorb water more effectively.

If you aren’t setting up right away, keep the trunk submerged in a bucket of water until you’re ready. This prevents the seal from forming too quickly, saving you the hassle of making another cut later.

Step 2: Keep the Water Flowing

Set up your Christmas tree as soon as possible after we deliver it, and be sure to fill the stand with plenty of water. The first few days are crucial—your tree will be extra thirsty, so you might need to top up the water several times a day.

Keep an eye on the water level daily. If the tree stops absorbing water, it might mean that the trunk’s cut has sealed over. A fresh cut can help get things flowing again.

Remember, if the base of the trunk dries out, it will start sealing up again. So, always keep the base submerged in water to prevent this from happening!

Step 3: Find the Right Spot

Australia’s warm climate can be tough on Christmas trees, so finding a cool spot for your tree can make a big difference. Try to keep it away from direct sunlight, as well as any heat sources like fireplaces, heaters, or vents.

If a heatwave hits, keep the water topped up to the max. Air conditioning can also dry out your tree, so be sure to monitor the water level. If you see browning on the outer branches, it could mean the tree is too warm or dry.

Sometimes, It’s Just Luck

Even with the best care, live trees can be unpredictable. If you follow all these steps and your tree doesn’t stay fresh as long as you’d hoped, reach out to us. We’re here to help and might even be able to provide a replacement tree.
